The Institute of Asian and Oriental Studies offers a vibrant research environment characterised by regional and disciplinary diversity, as well as a broad range of methodological and theoretical approaches. If you are interested in pursuing a doctorate, your first step is to identify a potential supervisor whose expertise aligns with your research interests. Prospective doctoral candidates are therefore encouraged to contact the relevant professor directly with a brief outline of their proposed topic and any preliminary research ideas.

The Institute participates in the doctoral collaboration Human–Environment Relations in Islamic Tradition (MUBIT), conducted in cooperation with the University of Basel.

The Gender Studies doctorate at UZH is part of the Interuniversity Doctoral Program in Gender Studies Switzerland (IDP), in which the Universities of Zurich, Basel, and Bern participate.

Graduate School of the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences

All doctoral students in programs offered by the Institute of Asian and Oriental Studies are automatically members of the Graduate School of the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences. The Graduate School serves as the organizational and administrative framework for all doctoral programs within the faculty. Here, doctoral students can find administrative, financial, and legal support and guidance for their doctoral studies.
