Admission requirements
You can find information about the general admission requirements here. For subject-specific admission please refer to the “Legal basis Master's in Japanese Studies Minor 30” section in the document “Appendix to Study Regulations” (Anhang zur Studienordnung) at the Infobox at the bottom of the page.
Passing requirements
To pass the Master's minor programme in Japanese Studies, at least 30 ECTS credits from the programme must be completed, and at least 50% of which must be graded (no fail/pass modules)
Available module selections are detailed in the groups below.
Module group 1: Academic Japanese
Passing requirements: at least 6 ECTS credits.
Core Elective Modules:
- Japanese Scientific Writing (UE), 3 ECTS credits, graded, always in the Fall Semester.
- Japanese Scientific Presentation (UE), 3 ECTS credits, pass/fail, always in Spring Semester.
- Kanbun/Kundoku (VL/UE), 3 ECTS credits, graded, always in the Spring Semester.
Module group 2: Japanese Philology
Passing requirements: at least 9 ECTS credits.
Core Elective Modules
- Japanese Source Texts: Translation and Commentation (UE), 3 ECTS credits, graded, every 2nd Fall Semester.
- Japanese Source Texts: Cursory Reading (UE), 3 ECTS credits, pass/fail, always in Spring Semester.
- Research topics in Japanese philology (seminar paper), 3 ECTS credits, graded, every semester.
Elective Modules:
- Research seminars on changing topics, 6 ECTS credits, graded, irregular (usually every semester).
Module group 3: Social science analysis of Japan
Passing requirements: at least 9 ECTS credits.
Core Elective Modules:
- Social Science Concepts and Theories of Japan (VL/UE), 6 ECTS credits, graded, always in the Fall Semester.
- Reading of Japanese Research Publications (UE), 6 ECTS credits, graded, always in Spring Semester.
- Introduction to Research Methods (in Social Sciences) (UE), 3 ECTS credits, pass/fail, always in the Spring Semester.
- Topics in social science. Japan research (seminar paper), 3 ECTS credits, graded, every semester.
Elective Modules:
- Research seminars on changing topics, 6 ECTS credits, graded, irregular (usually every semester).
Module group 4: Current research debates
Compulsory and elective modules according to the current semester offer.
Core Elective Modules:
- Asia and the Middle East in Current Debates (UE), 6 ECTS credits, graded, always in the Spring Semester.
Module group 5: Further curricular modules
Compulsory elective and elective modules according to the current semester offer.
Finally, students can opt for at least 6 more ECTS credits from any section of the program.
