CONCEPT and DATABASE

In October 2010, the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science awarded its grant for Japan Studies Based on International Collaboration to the project “Research and Evaluation of Japanese Buddhist Art in European Museums”, presented by Hosei University, Tokyo, in partnership with the Institute of East Asian Studies of the University of Zurich.

The project has been publishing numerous reports on collections in Europe. It is maintaining the database Japanese Buddhist Art in European Collections / 在欧博物館等保管日本仏教美術資料データベース

RESEARCH CONTENT

We conduct our research on the categories of sacral objects listed below.  The main focus is on Buddhism, but we include wider resources of religiosity such as Shinto that can be found in Japanese culture:

  1. Sculpture
  2. Painting
  3. Calligraphy and manuscripts (focus on hand-written material)
  4. Ritual implements
  5. Textiles
  6. Ofuda (including all types of printed amulets)
