Turn of the century accelerated sea travel mobilized armies, mercantile ships and toursist, and created European overseas communities. Coupled with late colonial expansion, the Mediterranean became a space for permanent and temporary migration. Based on her recent book Global Women, Colonial Ports, Liat Kozma's lecture will examine prostitution as one category of such migrants, who helped shaping settler communities and leisure travel from Southern Europe to North Africa and the Levant. It will examine, why, where to and how women crossed the Mediterranean to work in brothels.
