In its bid to alleviate poverty, the Indian state has been providing citizens with a growing range of welfare entitlements—ranging from pensions, housing plots, free midday meals, employment guarantees through the NREGA scheme, and subsidized rations. However the extent to which these entitlements have reached their intended beneficiaries has varied across states, and across regions within states. In this conference, international scholars from across several disciplines will seek to explain why particular schemes have or haven’t been successfully implemented in different Indian contexts.
