History of the Institute

The Institute of Asian and Oriental Studies (IAOS) was founded in January 2013 and brings together the disciplines of Indian Studies, Islamic Studies, Japanese Studies, Chinese Studies and Gender Studies which have been divided hitherto between three departments (The Department of Indo-European Studies, the Department of Oriental Studies and the Department of East Asian Studies). The goal of the institute is to strengthen research and teaching concerned with Asia and the Orient in the University of Zürich.
