Abstract
This presentation examines how the contemporary policies of western countries toward the sovereignty of Taiwan continue to be shaped by the historical legacies of the 1970s. Focusing on the United States and the United Kingdom, this presentation discusses how Washington and London coordinated their respective positions on the status of Taiwan as they were pursuing rapprochement with the PRC in 1972. In particular, it explains how Washington and London carefully crafted the language about Taiwan in their joint communiques with Beijing to avoid accepting China's claim of sovereignty, maintaining instead that the sovereignty of Taiwan remains undetermined.
