"Area studies" means different things in the US, the UK, France, and Germany. To infiltrate (rather than revisit) Area Studies from a humanities perspective means a different thing from looking at it in terms of the Social Sciences. Who and what are the subject of transregional studies? Gayatri Spovak will talk about these issues focussing specifically on Asian regions. As a feminist alter-humanist, she will be concerned with gender and language and further argue for the importance of Gramsci in the re-conceptualization of Area Studies today.
