Courses spring 2014

Beginners:		Basic course 1: "Following Arabic news and reports." Lecturer: Dr. Eva Youssef, Universität Zürich, Switzerland. Tuesday 12.00-13.30 (CET): 11. March - 27. May 2014 (12 sessions). Class is taught in English and Arabic. Level as specified by GER: B1
Pre-intermediate:		"دور المرأة العربية في الثورات العربية وهل تغير؟" The role of Arab women during the Arab spring and how it has developed. Lecturer: Adel Salama, M.A., Sultan Qaboos University, Oman. Friday 12.00-13.30 (CET): 14. March - 2. May 2014 (8 sessions). Class is mainly taught in Arabic. Instead of Sykpe, Google Hangouts is used for communication. Level as specified by GER: B1-B2.
Upper-intermediate:		"لاجئون ومهاجرون ومشردون في العالم العربي" Refugees, migrants, and displaced persons across the Arab World. Lecturer: Daniel Falk, M.A., Universität Leipzig, Germany. Tuesday 18.00-19.30 (CET): 11. March - 29. April 2014 (8 sessions). Class is taught mainly in Arabic. Level as specified by GER: B2.
Advanced:		"التطورات السياسية في الشرق الأوسط". Lecturer: David Henen, The American University in Cairo, Egypt. Tuesday 17.30-19.00 (CET): 11. March - 29. April 2014 (8 sessions). Class is exclusively taught in Arabic. Level as specified by GER: B2-C1.
Mode		Once a week, 90 minutes, in a small group of six to eight, online. The basic course has twelve sessions, but all the other courses have eight. Lessons will be progressive. Estimated time to prepare the lessons will be at least 2 hours per week. Cancelled sessions due to an emergency on the part of the lecturer will be substituted (normally added at the end of the semester).

Certificate		A certificate of participation will be issued if the student has attended at least three quarters of all meetings and if he/she has met the course requirements as defined by the lecturer at the beginning of the semester (This might include presentations in class or written exercises).
Participants		All those with a sound theoretical knowledge of Standard Arabic and the wish to improve listening and speaking skills in Modern Standard Arabic can participate. Please see also the detailed level description above in order to self-assess your skills and choose the appropriate course for you. In addition, your command of Arabic will be assessed in a personal online meeting upon registration.
Fees		250 EUR for an 8 session-course. 330 EUR for a 12 session-course. 10% discount on early registration. Fees are expected to be paid before teaching starts. If a student has to cancel his/ her participation before the first session, he/ she will be reimbursed the whole amount minus a charge of 60.- EUR. No reimbursement will be paid after the first session.

Technical Issues		Students need a computer, internet access, a headset (compulsory) and a Skype account. However, in case of course pre-intermediate, Google Hangouts will be used instead of Skype (this needs a Google account). In a personal online meeting, we will check whether the connection is working. Technical problems showing up during the semester that prevent a student from attending the class are subject to his/her own responsibility. Missed classes will, therefore, not be substituted. However, if a technical problem prevents all students from participating, the class will be substituted (normally added at the end of the semester).
