Dagmar Schäfer is currently Research Group Director of the independent research group “Concepts and Modalities: Practical Knowledge Transmission” at the Max Planck Institute for the History of Science in Berlin. Her research on the cultural history of technology is grounded in Chinese Studies, including practical experience in silk production and the history of the sciences and arts in the early modern era. She is concerned with the analysis of practical knowledge transmission, in particular the manifold media used to convey and maintain knowledge in East Asian arts and crafts. Dagmar Schäfer is currently publishing her book The Crafting of the 10,000 Things: Knowledge and Technology in Seventeenth-Century China (forthcoming 2011).
