Helen F. Siu is Professor of Anthropology at Yale University in New Haven. She has conducted extensive historical and ethnographic fieldwork in South China and Hong Kong since the 1970s examining socialist and post-socialist transformations, the revival of market towns, and lately, migration and vernacular modernity. Recent publications in these areas include Grounding Displacement: Uncivil Urban Spaces in South China (American Ethnologist, 2007) and Empire at the Margins: Culture, Ethnicity and Frontier in Early Modern China (University of California Press, 2006).
